Howard Yezerski Gallery announces Grey, Green, Red, White, an upcoming exhibition by German painter Peter Tollens. Using heavily pigmented oil paint on wood panel, Tollens creates dense, textured, elusive paintings that shift quietly beneath the gaze of the contemplative viewer.

Surface and color are important elements of Tollens' enterprise, and their interaction with light is one of its many rewards. In his most recent work, Tollens has ratcheted up the dialogue between color, surface, and light. Paint is used thickly and boldly, with a wider range of complimentary colors. Tollens makes his own paint by combining dry pigments with an oil base, resulting in a matte surface on the paintings. This unique texture captures and suspends each brush stroke in pigment. Glimpses of the underlying complimentary colors are revealed in every strokes' shadows and crevices. The traces of color, which are worked up in the surface of the paintings, give each brush stroke a sense of depth and contrast. This complexity slowly develops and reveals itself as the viewer contemplates the work.

The paintings with their elegance and quiet, subtle dynamism provide a welcome respite from a world of noise and relentless message.
