For
Immediate Release
Howard Yezerski Gallery is pleased to open the season with an
exhibition byRona Pondick. This exhibition will feature sculptural
and photographicwork by Pondick, an internationally recognized
artist.
In Metamorphosis of an Object at the Worcester Art Museum, Pondick
interspersed ancient figurative sculptures from the museum’s
collection with her own contemporary work. Such juxtapositions
demonstrate the universality of human expression and gesture that
transcends cultural and temporal boundaries, as well as an artist's
personal creative intentions.
Nowhere is this more clearly articulated than in the nine lithographic
prints that will be on view at Howard Yezerski Gallery, which
merge sculptural details from Pondick’s work with their
ancient counterparts. Side by side, the ancient and contemporary
whisper to each other and the viewer, "We are all one thing."
Their common humanity bridges a vast divide of time, miles, material
and technique with unsettling ease. In each print, from two pieces
created in some cases thousands of years apart, a single countenance—monstrous
but unequivocally human-- emerges. As Pondick reflects, “I’m
stepping back into history and I’m also stepping forward.
I’m doing both simultaneously.”
Anchoring the installation at the gallery and providing viewers
with an immediate sense of the physicality of her work will be
Untitled Animal, an odalisque-like animal-human sculpture of carbon
steel.
In addition to
her exhibition at the gallery, Metamorphosis of an Object at the
Worcester Art Museum will be on view through October 11th. Rona
Pondick will be speaking at the Worcester Art Museum on Wednesday,
September 23rd at 6:30 p.m. The exhibition will stay open until
8 that evening, providing visitors an opportunity to see the work
before or after Ms. Pondick’s talk. On the following evening,
September 24th, at 6:00pm the artist will be present for a book
signing at Howard Yezerski Gallery
