DOMINGO BARRERES: Scales of Spin
January 6 - February 7
Opening Reception Friday: January 6th 6-8pm

Howard Yezerski Gallery is pleased to present Scales of Spin, a new series of work by Spanish born painter Domingo Barreres. Touching on social concerns and current events from Iraq and Afghanistan to the passing of Pope John Paul II, Barreres builds paintings that are both richly layered with personal meaning as well as being politically charged.
Barreres combines images from the media as well as events and images that he considers to be culturally significant such as the Spanish Inquisition, Goya’s etchings, and Duchamp’s Fountains. Starting from a computer-generated image Barreres creates a series of vignettes in a style that is reminiscent of baroque painting. Using a decorative web of gold paint Barreres creates a symbolic latticework through out the paintings. This gives the work “ a decidedly ecclesiastical edge, akin to the gold embroideries on the mantles of the countless statues of the Virgin found in the churches of Southern Spain”.
The results are a series of paintings that are not only beautiful to look at but also challenging in the way they confront viewers with what is going on in the world at the beginning of the 21st century.
