In Greek mythology Orpheus is a talented lyricist who charms humans, gods, and animals with his musical talents. When his beloved Eurydice dies and is sent to the underworld he tries to rescue her, but his careless mistake sends her back for eternity.

In her exhibition of photographs at Howard Yezerski Gallery Denise Marika creates a modern day version of Orpheus & Eurydice. Orpheus lives in a world that is torn by chaos, war and violence while the underworld that Eurydice in habits is structured, peaceful and allows her artistic freedom of expression. She chooses to stay and he seeks to bring her back. As the Battle ensues, their struggle caught in this moment is reflected in the three photographs on display at the gallery

Marika’s work is about physical struggle and endurance and in these stills she takes these themes and applies them to this ancient Greek myth to create powerful and moving images that act as metaphors for the human condition in the 21stCentury.
