SARAH
MALAKOFF: Interiors
May 27 - July 5, 2005
Opening Reception Saturday June 4, 3:30 - 5:30pm
Howard Yezerski Gallery pleased to announce the first exhibition
of Sarah Malakoff: Interiors. Malakoff creates brightly colored
photographs of domestic interiors that feel familiar, yet have
a slightly skewed sense to them. All of her found interiors are
devoid of people, she removes all of the unnecessary clutter and
sometimes rearranges the often odd furnishings in each space.
By doing this each interior has an eerie feeling of being ordinary
but upon closer inspection are fraught with instabilities. The
photographs are fictions, which are grounded in reality but are
made surreal by the processes that Malakoff uses. The architecture
and the furnishings in each interior act as symbols of culture,
family, and memory. Tension creeps up in the disparity that Malakoff
creates in each scene. What is perceived as genuine or artificial,
real or surreal, forces the viewer to create their own narrative
and imagine the people who actually live in each place.
Sarah Malakoff received her BA from Smith College in Northhampton,
MA and her MFA from the School of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston,
MA. She currently lives in the Boston area and teaches at Bowdoin
College in Maine. .
